Saxophonist Charlie Parker, best known as “Bird” (short for “Yardbird”) is universally celebrated for single-handedly inventing bebop and bringing jazz into the modern era. Born in 1920, Parker only lived to 35 years old, yet his legacy remains one of the strongest in modern music. Each year, the City Parks Foundation and Summerstage present the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, gathering some of jazz’s most prominent musicians as they celebrate the mark that Parker left. Groups and artists include Jason Lindner, Mark Guiliana, DJ Greg Caz, the Randy Weston African Rhythms Sextet, Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles, The Artistry of Jazzmeia Horn, Charles Turner III, DeJohnette – Holland – Moran, Allan Harris, the Donny McCaslin Group, and Grace Kelly, with a master class by Samuel Coleman. Charlie Parker Jazz Festival is New York City’s annual salute to the legendary saxophonist. City Parks Foundation is proud to celebrate this histories festival, featuring contemporaries of Charlie Parker as well as young jazz musicians that continue to shape and drive the art form.
